Georgia Weather in August
Georgia weather in August peaks on two fronts at once. Tbilisi has its hottest month, about 32 °C (89 °F) in the afternoon with warm nights near 20 °C (68 °F), and the capital sees barely any rain. Meanwhile the Black Sea reaches its yearly high of about 27 °C (81 °F). Rain on the coast is building, though: Batumi gets about 221 mm, a good deal more than in July. The mountains offer the escape, with Kazbegi and Omalo near 22 °C (72 °F) by day and village festivals in Tusheti and Khevsureti.
Black Sea coast
The sea reaches its warmest, about 27 °C, along the entire coast, and Batumi's air averages about 28 °C by day and 21-22 °C at night. August also marks the return of heavy rain: Batumi gets about 221 mm over 12 days and Kobuleti about 241 mm. Anaklia and Ureki, further north, are a little drier at about 180-190 mm. Beaches are at their busiest.
Kutaisi and the western lowlands
Kutaisi has its hottest and also its driest month: about 30 °C by day, sultry nights of 20-21 °C, and only about 78 mm of rain over 7 days. Tskaltubo is slightly hotter. Zugdidi and Martvili are wetter, about 150 mm. The shady paths and cool water of the Okatse and Martvili canyons draw plenty of visitors, so arrive early.
Tbilisi, Kakheti and the east
August edges out July as Tbilisi's hottest month, at about 32 °C, and Rustavi holds near 34 °C. Rain nearly disappears: Tbilisi gets about 39 mm over 5 days and Rustavi about 30 mm. The Kakheti valley floor is just as warm, with Kvareli and Lagodekhi near 32 °C, while Sighnaghi, perched above the valley, sits closer to 30 °C. Grapes ripen ahead of rtveli. Akhaltsikhe and Borjomi also reach 29-30 °C, with nights of 14-15 °C.
Mountains (1,300 m and higher)
High summer holds in the Caucasus. Mestia averages about 24 °C by day, Kazbegi and Omalo about 22 °C, and Ushguli and Gudauri about 19-21 °C, with nights of 8-12 °C. Showers ease compared with June and July, to about 9-11 wet days in Svaneti and around Kazbegi. Tushetoba fills Omalo with horse races early in the month, and Shatiloba brings Khevsur music to Shatili. All the summer roads, including the Abano and Datvisjvari passes, are usually open.

At their best in August
What August is good for
The weather in Georgia in August favours the mountains first and the sea second. Spend most of the trip in Svaneti, Kazbegi, Tusheti or Khevsureti, timing Omalo or Shatili for their festivals, and add a few beach days in Batumi, Kobuleti or Anaklia for the warmest water of the year. Bakuriani and Borjomi are easy family escapes. In Tbilisi and Kakheti, sightsee early and late. Avoid the dry steppe at David Gareja and Vashlovani at midday, when the heat is hardest.

Georgia in August: weather FAQ
Where is it hottest in August?
Rustavi, south-east of Tbilisi, averages about 34 °C (94 °F) by day in August, with nights near 22 °C (72 °F). Tbilisi follows at about 32 °C (89 °F), then the Alazani Valley around Lagodekhi and Kvareli. On the coast, highs of 27-29 °C feel muggy but stay a few degrees lower than in the dry east.
Is Anaklia or Kobuleti better for an August beach week?
On weather alone, Anaklia. Both have the sea at about 27 °C (81 °F) and afternoons near 28 °C (82 °F), but Anaklia gets about 179 mm of rain in August against roughly 241 mm in Kobuleti, and its nights run about two degrees warmer, near 22 °C. Batumi, between the two on rainfall at about 221 mm, has more to do on a wet day.
Will it be cold at Tushetoba in Omalo?
Not by day. Omalo averages about 22 °C (72 °F) in August and about 11 °C (52 °F) at night, with rain on about 8 days, fewer than earlier in summer. Evenings at ~1,880 m turn chilly fast, so bring a warm layer for the horse races and feasts, and drive the 4x4 road over the Abano Pass in daylight.
Do nights get cold in the mountains in August?
Cool, not cold. Kazbegi and Mestia drop to about 11-12 °C (52-54 °F) at night, and Ushguli and Gudauri to about 8-9 °C (46-48 °F). Up at the Abano Pass on the road to Tusheti, nights fall to about 5 °C (41 °F). A fleece and a light down jacket cover most evenings, even when camping.
