Georgia Weather in May
Georgia weather in May brings the first truly warm days and the greenest landscapes of the year. Tbilisi and Kutaisi both average about 24 °C (75 °F) in the afternoon, with comfortable nights near 13 °C (55 °F). The price is rain: May is one of the wettest months in the east, and Kakheti sees frequent thunderstorms. Batumi is a gentler 20 °C (68 °F) and the sea has warmed to about 17 °C (63 °F), bracing rather than inviting. In the mountains the snow retreats from the valleys, though Kazbegi still only manages about 15 °C (59 °F).
Black Sea coast
The coast warms steadily. Batumi reaches about 20 °C and Ureki, with its dark magnetic sand, about 23 °C, while nights sit near 13-14 °C. Rain stays fairly low by Adjara standards, about 92 mm in Batumi over 10 days. The sea climbs from 12 °C in April to about 17 °C, enough for a quick dip on a sunny afternoon but not for long swims.
Kutaisi and the western lowlands
May gives Kutaisi, Tskaltubo, Martvili and Zugdidi their most comfortable weather of the year: about 24 °C by day, 13-14 °C at night and only around 9-10 rainy days. Kutaisi celebrates Kutaisoba in early May. Rivers run full, so the Martvili and Okatse canyons and the Kinchkha waterfall look their best. Zugdidi is the wettest of the group, about 142 mm.
Tbilisi, Kakheti and the east
Kakheti has its rainiest stretch now: Kvareli gets about 130 mm over 13 days and Telavi about 119 mm. The vines are in leaf and the Alazani Valley is at its most vivid. Tbilisi averages about 24 °C with roughly 10 wet days, and Rustavi reaches 26 °C. Sighnaghi, with 21 °C afternoons and 11 °C nights, is at its most pleasant. Zezvaoba brings horse racing to Alvani at the end of the month.
Mountains (1,300 m and higher)
Gudauri has its soggiest month, about 196 mm over 19 days, and the lifts have stopped. Kazbegi greens up but stays cool, with highs around 15 °C, lows around 5 °C and 14 rainy days; Mestia is similar. Snow still blocks the high crossings: the roads to Omalo and Shatili and the Zagari Pass from Ushguli usually open between late May and late June. The road up to Bakhmaro in Guria usually reopens during May.

At their best in May
What May is good for
May is ideal for western Georgia, and for wine country between showers. Base yourself in Kutaisi for Gelati, Motsameta, Prometheus Cave and Martvili Canyon, then head east to Sighnaghi and Telavi, timing Tbilisi for the New Wine Festival if your dates match. Lower hikes around Borjomi and Lagodekhi are green and pleasant. Leave high trekking in Svaneti and Kazbegi until June, and treat the sea as a paddle. The weather in Georgia in May rewards a flexible plan, with indoor options ready for stormy afternoons.

Georgia in May: weather FAQ
How wet is Kakheti in May?
Wetter than at any other time of year in most of the region. Kvareli's total is about 130 mm, spread over 13 days, with Telavi close behind at roughly 119 mm, often in heavy afternoon storms, while Sighnaghi sees about 95 mm. Days are warm, about 23-24 °C (73-75 °F), so showers pass quickly and the Alazani Valley looks its greenest. Keep cellar visits for the wettest hours.
Is Ureki warmer than Batumi in May?
Yes, by about three degrees. Ureki, on the Guria coast north of Kobuleti, averages about 23 °C (73 °F) in the afternoon, while Batumi stays near 20 °C (68 °F). Nights are similar, around 13 °C. The sea is the same at both, about 17 °C (63 °F), so either one suits sunbathing and a quick dip rather than long swims.
What is Gudauri like in May?
Wet and quiet. The ski season is over, and May is Gudauri's rainiest month, with about 196 mm over 19 days. Days reach about 12 °C (54 °F) and nights hover near 2 °C (36 °F), so snow still covers the upper slopes. This month it works as a stop on the way to Kazbegi rather than a destination in itself.
Is May a good month for Martvili Canyon and Kutaisi?
Yes, one of the best. Kutaisi averages about 24 °C (75 °F) by day and 14 °C (57 °F) at night, with around 9 rainy days and about 85 mm of rain. Rivers are high after the spring melt, which makes Martvili and Okatse canyons and the waterfalls of Samegrelo look their fullest. Bring shoes that cope with wet paths.
